Discover San Diego’s Uptown

Hillcrest / Mission Hills /Banker’s Hill

Uptown San Diego

Hillcrest is centrally located just north of Downtown. It began as part of the uptown district called University Heights back in 1907. It is difficult to define exactly where it starts and stops, because the neighborhood blends seamlessly into the surrounding areas of Banker’s Hill to the south, Mission Hills on the west, and University Heights on the east.

This neighborhood is a fun and lively place to stroll, window shop, or pop in to any number of restaurants. In Hillcrest, there are restaurants galore, from your national chains to Sushi, to Ethnic food. The restaurant selection will surely please even the pickiest palate.

As far as diversity, you could compare Hillcrest with New York’s Greenwich village, or The Castro in San Francisco. Hillcrest is San Diego’s version of the vibrant, colorful, hip and lively neighborhood full of character.

If you are looking for something similar, but a bit more tame…Mission Hills is your bet. Just west of Hillcrest, Mission Hills has the benefit of all that Hillcrest has to offer, with less of the hustle and bustle. A quieter community filled with lovely craftsman homes exuding charm and character, older stately homes and large mansions.

Overlooking the Presidio Park and Mission Valley, many of the beautiful homes were designed by premier architects. Making this area one of San Diego’s oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods.

Banker’s Hill, sometimes referred to as Park West, is located just west of Balboa Park and south of Mission Hills and Hillcrest. It was an early upscale neighborhood, acquiring it’s name due to the reputation as a home of the affluent. Many of the homes date back to the 19th century, some remain residential, while others have been converted to office buildings. Most of the businesses are located along 5th Avenue, with a large majority being medical and dental offices.
