San Diego Chargers and STAR/PAL celebrate 8 years of Junior Charger Training Camps

Junior Charger Training Camp

Junior Charger Training Camp-NLF PLAY 60

As Bob Dylan sang… oh, the times, they are a-changin’. No doubt, things are different from when we were young. Gone are the days when kids could play outside all day long.  I remember that I intentionally stayed outside as long as possible, because if I came in, and sat around…my mother would give me a chore to do. Unfortunately, it is no longer safe to allow our children to play unsupervised.

Add to this our ever -progressing technology…video games, blu-ray, HD TV, computers, and, of course, the internet. All of these things have resulted in a diminished level of activity for our youth. Which has led to an overwhelming increase in childhood obesity.

The San Diego Chargers, as part of the Play 60 initiative, are committed to doing something about that.  The schedule for the 2010 Junior Chargers Training Camp has been released. The training camps are presented by Kaiser Permanente this year.

The Chargers, and San Diego’s Police Athletic League, (STAR/PAL) have been providing these free football skills camps for 8 years now. Boys and girls aged 7-14 will not only learn the basic football fundamentals, they will also learn about how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle.

Chargers Junior Training Camps are held at different locations throughout San Diego County, on Tuesday afternoons beginning at 4:00 pm.  Every child who participates in the camp will receive a t-shirt, and a Charger goodie bag! And best of all….It’s FREE!

To get more information about participation or volunteering, or to register for a camp. Visit http://www.starpal.orgor call STAR/PAL at 619-531-2718.

Who says, “Nothing in life is FREE”!

San Diego Events Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend Events in San Diego

Labor Day 2010 on September 6th

Labor Day San Diego

Labor Day means different things to different people. To some it is the symbolic end of the summer. However, I’m not sure we even started summer this year! To sport fans, Labor Day marks the beginning of football season. GO CHARGERS!!! Families with school age children often use Labor Day to get in that last vacation before the school year starts, although school starting times vary now.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. Little by little the holiday was adopted by various states. In June of 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September a legal holiday. Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement, and a tribute to American workers, the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership.

The question we are all faced with…? What will we do with that extra day in the weekend? Well, as far as San Diego Events Labor Day Weekend, you have plenty of choices.

  1. Take in a Padre Game at Petco Park: San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies from September 3-5, and then San Diego Padres vs. LA Dodgers on September 6th. As you may know, the Padres are suffering from a 7 game losing streak. They could use our support!
  2. Sight & Sound Concert by the Bay, in collaboration with ART SAN DIEGO, will present a free concert outside the Hilton San Diego Bayfront on September 3, from 7-10pm. The concert is a free event to celebrate the San Diego Arts Community.
  3. Need a little laughter? Joe Rogan is performing at the House of Blues at 1055 Fifth Avenue on September 4th at 7pm.
  4. There are a few family orientated events as well. The House of Ukraine 50th Anniversary Concert is being held at the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center on September 4th. On the 5th of September the Hillcrest Farmers Market will be doing face painting, and in La Jolla, enjoy the La Jolla Concerts by the Sea.

As always San Diego offers plenty to do, and this is just a small list. Whatever you choose to do this weekend, enjoy that extra day off. Have a great one!!!
